UPDATED: Another shooting in Portland Eastern

Published:Monday | April 1, 2019 | 9:26 AM

Two shootings in fewer than four days have triggered fears among residents in east Portland, which has accounted for four of the eight homicides committed in the parish since the start of 2019.

The latest shooting occurred near a popular entertainment spot along West Street in the vicinity of the Total service station where two men were shot.

The shooting reportedly happened shortly after 1:15 this morning.

An alleged eyewitness claimed that shortly before the shooting two men drove up on a motorbike and headed into a dark alley near the entertainment spot.

The eyewitness further said that shortly after, several explosions were heard.

Dozens of patrons, who were inside the building, along with those on the outside, ran for cover.

When the shooting subsided, the two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds.

The injured men were taken to hospital.

Last Thursday, 24-year-old Tevin McKenzie of Halls Avenue was shot and killed by a gunman along West Street in Port Antonio.

Two other men were also shot in that incident.

In recent weeks, there has been a flare-up of violence in the East Portland constituency, which has also seen two stabbing deaths over a one-week period in March.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story stated that one man was shot and killed, while another was shot and injured in the April 1, 2019 attack. The police have since reported that no one died as a result of the shooting. We apologise for the error.
