Come January 24, 2020, persons wishing to obtain a provisional or learner's driver's licence will have to pass a written test.

Transport Minister Robert Montague made the disclosure speaking with The Gleaner at the Jamaica Labour Party Conference happening today at the National Arena in St Andrew.

“Nobody will be able to get a provisional license unless you pass a written road code test,” Montague said.

At present, anyone wishing to obtain a provisional licence can do so by presenting certified copies of their photographs at the Tax Administration of Jamaica and paying a fee of $1,800.00.

Montague, also the JLP chairman, said that the government was moving forward to have the regulations of the newly passed Road Traffic Act.

The Road Traffic Act was passed in both houses of parliament in December 2018, however, regulations for the Act, which includes a list of new offences and increased penalties for breaches, have still not been completed and only some sections are enforced.

The legislation, which extends to over 100 pages, is expected to be fully effective in early 2020.
