US President Donald Trump has tweeted for the first time in several hours since revealing that he and First Lady Melania Trump are COVID-19 positive.

In a video from his handle, the US president confirmed that he was being transferred to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and said that he and and the first lady, were doing very well. He thanked "everyone" for the tremendous support.

"Thank you very much I appreciate it. I'll never forget it," he said in the 18-second clip.

The Associated Press earlier today reported that the White House had said that the visit to Walter Reed is precautionary and that Trump will work from the hospital’s presidential suite, which is equipped to allow him to continue his official duties.

The White House had also said Trump was“fatigued” and had been injected with an experimental antibody drug combination for the virus that has already killed more than 205,000 Americans and spread to the highest reaches of the US government.

Trump had announced early this morning by Twitter that he and the first lady had tested positive for COVID-19.

The results came hours after it was revealed that top White House aide Hope Hicks had contracted the disease.

His Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, and his wife, Jill, said they have tested negative after encountering Trump at Tuesday’s debate.
