National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang says the police force will have a world class telecommunications network by the end of this financial year.

The security minister gave that commitment while addressing an Inspectors Symposium held at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay on Wednesday.

He said the police communications system was neglected and allowed to deteriorate to the point where divisions had difficulties communicating with each other.

"The government has set out to upgrade the entire 25 radio systems and by the end of this financial year the police will have communications from end to end in Jamaica for the first time, not only effective policing but end-to-end communications," Chang told police Inspectors.

The government has invested over $600 million to retool and upgrade the telecommunication systems of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, a process Dr Chang noted will see an islandwide improvement that will provide the police with good -quality communications, in both its mobile and fixed network systems.
