Electronic immigration gates are now operational at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James.

The six e-gates were installed at the beginning of the winter tourist season in December and came on stream last week.

Passengers started using the e-gates yesterday as Jamaica's busiest airport.

The introduction of the e-gates represents a significant advancement in airport technology, eliminating the need for immigration officers on the frontline.

Instead, facial recognition is used to process travellers, allowing for smoother passenger flow and reduced wait times.

The introduction of the e-gates comes as Sangster has recorded increased passenger arrivals.

On Wednesday, MBJ Airports Limited, which operates the facility, indicated that the traffic for December 2023 outperformed 2022 by 13 per cent with 500,000 passengers using the airport for the month.

It's anticipating that the 2023/2024 winter season will continue on a similar trajectory with high passenger traffic volume throughout the terminal and airport for January to March.
