Academic and senior administrative and professional staff at the University of the West Indies, Mona have backed away from taking industrial action as efforts are being made to undertake an interim salary adjustment while a compensation review takes place.

The workers and their unions signalled last week that they would take protest action to press the government on the matter.

They argued that UWI employees were the only major group of public sector workers not to benefit from the increases paid to public sector workers as part of the Government's compensation reform.

In a statement today, the university said the relevant parties met yesterday and a mechanism was put in place to work out an interim salary adjustment to be presented to the Minister of Finance and the Public Service by the end of January for consideration.

The interim salary adjustment will subsist until a comprehensive salary review is completed, it noted.

“We value the contributions of our academic and administrative staff and are dedicated to ensuring that their well-being is looked after to ensure a caring accountable, motivated and professional team,” stated Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor of The UWI Mona Campus, Professor Densil Williams.

The university stated that it understands the importance of addressing the concerns raised by its faculty and staff members and is committed to fostering dialogue toward an amicable resolution.
