In the face of the escalating threat posed by rising sea levels, historic Lucea in Hanover finds itself at a critical crossroads.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has alluded to the possibility of relocating the recently refurbished market, among other sections of the town, as a strategic response to safeguard this vulnerable community.

Holness made the announcement during a tour of the market this afternoon, revealing the government's proactive approach to address townships in rural areas and parish capitals.

Emphasising the critical role of markets in both rural and urban lives, as well as in townships, Holness underscored the need for a comprehensive plan, especially in light of the challenges faced by historic locations like Lucea.

Despite the recent investment of $20 million to refurbish the Hopewell Market, the facility still grapples with flooding during heavy rainfall due to Lucea's low elevation—sitting at or just below sea level.

Holness recognised the urgency of creating infrastructure that is not only resilient to climate change but also capable of withstanding the town's susceptibility to flooding during high tides and heavy rain.

Addressing the vendors, Holness acknowledged the inevitable impact of climate change on their way of life, whether through heavy rain or rising tides.

He assured them that as the government upgrades the market, it will prioritise climate resilience to ensure its longevity and functionality, but he warned them to be prepared to relocate to another area worst case scenario.

Lucea is home to a number of historic landmarks, which were valuable to the country, and can be developed as attractions.
