The assault case against former People's National Party (PNP) representative Oshane Gayle was dismissed after the prosecution offered no evidence against him on Monday.

Through her attorneys, the female complainant indicated at a hearing in the St Elizabeth Parish Court that she was no longer interested in pursuing the matter.

The Crown later discontinued the case.

Gayle was charged last October with assault occasioning bodily harm for allegedly hitting his then partner, who was also pregnant, during a domestic dispute.

His attorney, Thomas Levene, said Gayle, a teacher, is "happy that this matter is now behind him" and has been bonding with his child who was born in December.

"It has been a very stressful period for him in terms of his political ambitions, as well as how people have viewed him. He is now concentrating on trying to build back whatever character he can salvage," Levene told The Gleaner

The complainant was represented by attorneys Yushaine Morgan and Sherrice Cummings.

Following the news of the alleged incident, the PNP removed Gayle as its councillor-caretaker for the Lacovia Division in St Elizabeth.
