Disgruntled UTech employees stage silent protest over compensation issues
Academic and administrative staff at The University of Technology, Jamaica, this morning staged a silent protest to press their case for a better wage package from the Government.
The demonstration involved workers at the campuses in Papine, St Andrew and Montego Bay, St James.
A similar group of workers protested outside the Ministry of Finance.
They say the action is not a strike and classes will not be disrupted.
Instead, the workers say the protest is “a poignant expression of our concerns and a call for meaningful dialogue with the Government.”
They argue that the offer from the Government fails to align with the qualifications and the demands of the daily job responsibilities of all categories of staff.
“The inadequacy of the compensation package not only undermines the hard work and dedication of UTech, Ja staff but also poses a serious challenge in retaining and attracting top-tier talent essential for UTech Ja's continued success as the national university. Moreover, the outstanding parity issue for the administrative staff since 2017 needs to be settled.”
