Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie today called for Jamaicans to stick with the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) when they cast their votes in the local government election.

McKenzie this afternoon announced that the polls will be held on Monday, February 26, with Nomination Day being Thursday, February 8.

The announcement triggered a celebratory ringing of bells and blowing of horns during today's national meeting of JLP supporters, local government candidates, and Members of Parliament at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St James.

"The time has come for our citizens to choose the next set of councillors to represent them at the local level. As a party and an administration, we are facing the people of Jamaica...[and] as public servants with humility, knowing that the power to choose their local representatives is vested in them," McKenzie said prior to the announcement.

"We of the JLP are confident that the majority of Jamaicans will continue to believe in the policies and programmes of this great JLP," McKenzie added.

McKenzie argued that the Ministry of Local Government has been strengthened since 2016 to give more opportunities to councillors.

"This administration, when we provide resources, every councillor regardless of your political persuasion is treated the same way. We don't play politics in local government," said McKenzie.
