The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has expelled seven members who have nominated themselves as independent candidates or candidates for the People's National Party (PNP) for the upcoming local government election.

Those booted are Nerpatrick Smith from the Palmers Cross Division, Omar White from the Ritches Division, Eric Wint of the Martha Brae Division, and Romaine Morris from the Mocho Division.

Also out of the JLP are Leroy Dunn from the Guys Hill Division, Keith McCook of the Red Hills Division, and George Planto of the Papine Division.

The JLP says the move is in keeping with regulations which prohibit members from running against an approved candidate of the party.

“As such, the actions of these members necessitated their expulsion,” it said in a statement today.

The JLP says it acknowledges the efforts and contributions of these individuals during their association with the party.

However, the party emphasises its commitment to maintaining unity and discipline among its ranks, especially during crucial electoral periods.

“Looking ahead, the Jamaica Labour Party remains steadfast in its support for its endorsed candidates across various divisions. We are confident in the leadership abilities of our candidates to effectively represent their constituencies and uphold the party's values.”
