Jamaican tenor David Reid has died
Jamaican singer and musician David Reid has died. He was 95.
Reid was hailed as one of the best tenor voices in the island who became a national treasure when he was featured as the first tenor to record what became Jamaica's National Anthem.
"He was one of a kind. He was the one who sang the National Anthem to Parliament in 1962 for its acceptance. Thanks to him we have the best National Anthem,” Rev. Canon Calvin McIntyre.
“My sincerest condolences to his son, the very Rev'd David (Tony) Reid, his wife Andrea; Tony's sister Suzanne, and their children,” said Rev. Canon Georgia 'Grace' Jervis.
“Not only was David Reid Snr an amazing singer who brought joy to many a hearts here in Jamaica and abroad, he had a genuinely warm and welcoming personality, which made everyone extremely comfortable in his presence.”
Rev. Jervis continued, “As one who benefited from his musical genius as a student of his back in the 1980s, I have always been in awe of this remarkable man who in his nineties, was able not just to sing well, but to convey through his music, a deep love for God, and God's people.
“There is no doubt in my mind then, that angels will lead him into paradise and that martyrs will welcome him, as he takes his place among the front-liners in heaven's choir.”
Rev. Jervis added, “May he rest in peace, and may the wonderful and treasured memories he created with his children and grandchildren during his lifetime comfort them in this time of sorrow.”
Rev. Canon Hartley Perrin, Custos of Westmoreland, said Reid Snr was one of the most outstanding voices in Jamaica. “I had the pleasure of hosting him here in Westmoreland on more than one occasion. Condolences to his family. He was a talented and good Jamaican. May his soul rest in everlasting peace,” Perrin said.
Reid Snr served as Director of Choirs in the Anglican Church for 70 years, starting at the St George's Anglican Church on East Street in Kingston.
