Man charged for attacking cop with stone gets $150,000 bail

A man charged for attacking a policeman with a stone was on Tuesday granted $150,000 bail in the St Catherine Parish Court.

Joshua Walters of Portmore is charged with assault at common law.

"Your honour, I am my own lawyer. By the way, I don't even know why I am here," Walters told Parish Court Judge Yvette Wenthworth-Miller when he was offered legal aid.

The Clerk of Courts indicated that it is believed that the accused has psychiatric issues.

Walters was ordered to return to court on May 7, when the matter will again be mentioned.

It is being alleged that on the day in question

the policeman was at the St Jago Shopping Centre in Spanish Town when he was attacked by Walters, who was armed with a stone.

The policeman took evasive action and fired his service pistol, hitting Walters in the process.

Walters was taken to the nearby Spanish Town Hospital, where he admitted.

He was subsequently charged.

When he appeared in court on Tuesday, he was just released from the hospital.
