#JAVOTES2024 | Labourites in Grove Town pushing for incumbent to become 'five-star general'
Supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) have declared incumbent councillor for the Grove Town division in southern Manchester, Iceval 'Cherry' Brown, as "unbeatable" and will become a "five-star general" following today's local government elections.
"If Andrew Holness come side a Cherry now Andrew Holness a lose!" proclaimed Fabian Shaw, referring to the JLP leader and prime minister.
He and other Labourites were gathered at the Plowden Primary and Infant School to cast their vote.
Brown, who has been the JLP councillor for the division for the last 20 years, is running against Ronald Schloss of the People's National Party (PNP).
Brown's record of achievement will secure her win, Shaw asserted.
"She's doing a lot for us. We don't have any running water but she make sure there was some old steel drum, she mek sure she fix dem up. Yuh see di parish tank, wi did fraid to drink di water and she mek sure she fix, now it's portable, every month health inspectors come and test the water, it's perfect," he said.
Shaw declared that Brown will win her fifth consecutive election when results are announced later today.
Supporters of the PNP, in contrast, are adamant that Brown's time as councillor for the division is at end.
"A nuh nuh joke ting, him (Shloss) going to beat har ( Brown) and mek har stay round a har yaad a fret," O'Neil Haphenden said.
Another PNP supporter, Jahphet Hickey chimed in that "time come now wi haffi move forward".
Brown defeated the PNP's Rema Williamson by 883 votes in the 2016 local government elections.
Brown polled 1,947 votes to Williamson's 1,109.
