The Director of Elections Glasspole Brown has transferred the final counting of ballots for divisions in St Andrew East Rural to the head office of the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ).

In a media release Tuesday afternoon, the EOJ said the final count of the ballots from that division that were cast in Monday's Local Government Elections, will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Under the Representation of the People Act, the Director of Elections may change the place selected for the final counting of ballots in certain situations.

Section 45(2A) of the law states that "the Chief Electoral Officer, whenever he is satisfied that it is expedient to change the place designated for the final count, may direct the Returning Officer  to carry out the final count of votes at such place as the Chief Electoral Office may specify and to notify each candidate, within twenty-four hours, of the issue of such a direction."

It continues that the Chief Electoral Officer can postpone for a period not exceeding 48 hours the carrying out of the final count of votes. Each candidate is to be immediately informed of any such postponement.

The final counting of ballots is under way at designated counting centres in the other constituencies.

St Andrew East Rural has five divisions.

They are Gordon Town, Mavis Bank, Dallas, Harbour View and Kintyre.
