The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has won the majority of parishes in Monday's local government elections following the final count.

The exercise was completed on Thursday.

Some 228 divisions were contested.

In a media release this morning, the EOJ said JLP candidates won the majority of divisions in seven parishes, while candidates for the People's National Party (PNP) won in five parishes.

The parishes won by the JLP are St Thomas, Portland, St Ann, Trelawny, St James, St Elizabeth and Clarendon.

Kingston and St Andrew ended in a tie with the PNP and the JLP winning 20 seats each.

Under the law, the returning officer will cast the final vote to break the tie.

The officer will be guided by the popular vote.

It was reported that the PNP won the popular vote.

Meanwhile, the EOJ notes that the PNP won the majority of the divisions in the Municipality of Portmore as well as the position of Mayor.
