Sexual offences dominate Easter Term of St Catherine Circuit

More than 400 cases are set to be heard for the Easter Term of the St Catherine Circuit, with sexual offences dominating the court list.

Today's ceremonial opening of the term, which runs until July, was presided by Justice Yvonne Brown.

Head of the St Catherine North Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Hopton Nicholson, and Custos of St Catherine, Icilyn Golding, also participated in the proceedings.

After sexual offences, murder is second highest on the list, followed by arson, robberies, lottery scamming and other Scheduled A offences.

In her address, Brown stated that with the long roster of cases to be dealt with, the police, lawyers, and other relevant stakeholders must work in tandem to secure the timely delivery of justice.

Attorney-at-law Donald Bryan, responding on behalf of the Private Bar, told the judge that attorneys are prepared to work in the pursuit of justice in a timely manner.

"I must also acknowledge the satisfactory number of jurors today, which is commendable, as the numbers last time affected the timely trial of cases," Bryan said.
