Prof Shafi Ahmed to speak at Caribbean Medical Professionals’ Summit

The organisers of the Caribbean Medical Professionals’ Summit (CAMPS) have informed that multi-award-winning surgeon, teacher, futurist, and innovator, Professor Shafi Ahmed, will be a keynote speaker for the ‘Toward Professional and Personal Development’ event. CAMPS is slated to be held May 31- June 2 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, Kingston. It will host physicians at all stages of their careers as attendees and a variety of global leaders in medicine and health, like Professor Ahmed, as speakers, panellists, and workshop facilitators.

Professor Ahmed is known as ‘The World’s Most Watched Surgeon’, having streamed live operations via Google Glass, Virtual Reality, social media and national British television.

He has been a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, Bart’s Medical School, and Imperial College London, among many other institutions, and is considered one of the top 20 global influencers in digital health and innovation, and one of the top-50 global health experts in artificial intelligence. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a US non-profit that identifies, connects top digital health leaders who make significant contributions to digital health global, and named Professor Ahmed a Future50 Clinical Leader in 2020.

Shawna-Kaye Lester, creator of the Caribbean Medical Professionals’ Summit, said she was excited about the unique value Professor Ahmed brings.

“The incorporation of artificial intelligence into healthcare is not a future reality; it’s a current occurrence that will only grow, so I am excited to have a true expert in the field coming to CAMPS. He’ll help attendees understand how to future-proof their careers.” Professor Ahmed will be the speaker at CAMPS and also lead a small-group skills workshop for those who want to delve more deeply into his topic of artificial intelligence in medicine and public health. Lester also explained that “Professor Ahmed represents our focus on professional and personal development very well. In addition to being a cancer surgeon, he’s an entrepreneur and a humanitarian who cares about improving access to medical education and healthcare.” Professor Ahmed’s work in war and conflict zones earned him a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2020.

The Caribbean Medical Professionals’ Summit, created to fill a need for career development, self-care and wellness, and mentorship and networking among medical professionals in the Caribbean, is the first of its kind to be held within the region. The event will feature keynote speakers over Professor Ahmed and cancer researcher Dr Kemi Doll.
