NSWMA removing bulky waste from Portmore communities
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has embarked on a drive to clear bulky waste and other debris from communities in Portmore, St Catherine.
Already, the exercise, which is being carried out over two week, saw activities being undertaken in Waterford.
NSWMA Executive Director Audley Gordon indicated that 10 loads of bucky waste have been removed from the area along with 10 derelict vehicles.
It was reported that the presence of derelict vehicles in the area has been a longstanding issue with over 100 of them in the community.
Gordon said more work is being done in the area.
"We have been getting complaints from the community about mosquito infestation and other such problem so it is a good start, which is to be continued," Gordon said.
The campaign has been welcomed by councillor for the division Fenley Douglas.
"As the councillor for Waterford, I welcome the effort of the National Solid Waste Management Authority in removing these vehicles. These can be a security risk, which is use by criminals to assault our females and males too; it is a great move," he said.
His sentiments were shared by residents.
"Some of the vehicles have been abandoned for more than 20 years, I come and see them, so this is well-received," Margaret Newby said.
