September 26 committal hearing for St James mother charged with murder of infant daughter
A committal hearing is to be held in the St James Parish Court on September 26 for the mother accused of throwing her five-month-old daughter from the roof of a three-storey dwelling last December.
At that time, it is expected that the case against Shamoya Green, who is charged with murder, will be transferred to the St James Circuit Court.
The hearing is scheduled to be held online.
During today's court proceedings, presiding parish judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton said that it would be difficult to transport Green from the South Camp Adult Correctional Centre in St Andrew, where she is currently in custody, due to her physical and mental health challenges.
Citing a recently updated medical report for Green, the judge noted that the defendant suffers from a seizure disorder with resulting psychosis, and that she is unfit to enter a plea as her mental state has not improved in the past few months.
It is expected that a fitness to plea hearing will take place in the circuit court to determine whether Green, who is represented by attorney Jillian Haughton, can stand trial.
It is being alleged that about 5:35 p.m. on December 6, 2023, Green was at home with her common-law husband and other family members when she tried to have a conversation with him about their relationship.
However, he reportedly put off the talks for later that evening.
Green reportedly became enraged and left the room, taking her baby with her.
She then reportedly took the child to the roof of the third floor of the family's house and allegedly threw her child onto a concrete pit in the yard.
The police were alerted and the infant was taken to hospital, where she died while being treated.
