SCOTIA JAMAICA Life Insurance recently renewed its sponsorship of the White River Fish Sanctuary’s annual Swim for the Sanctuary, in line with its commitment to environmental sustainability and community health.

The event, led by the Jamaica Inn Foundation and the White River Fish Sanctuary and which was held this year on November 30, highlights the importance of protecting Jamaica’s marine biodiversity, while also promoting physical and mental well-being among participants.

“The Swim for the Sanctuary initiative plays a vital role in restoring fish populations and coral reefs along Jamaica’s north coast. Scotia’s involvement aligns seamlessly with its broader mission to foster sustainable development, protect the environment, and support community-driven conservation efforts,” said a media release from Scotia Insurance.

At the heart of the Scotia Insurance’s engagement is Debra Lopez-Spence, president of Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance Company, whose long-standing passion for marine conservation brought personal meaning to the sponsorship.

“It’s incredible to witness the positive impact the sanctuary has on marine life and local fishing communities. Participating in this event allows us to contribute to a healthier environment, while encouraging the community to embrace physical well-being,” she said.

The health benefits of the event were evident, especially for the young swimmers who participated. Open-water swimming is a low-impact, cardiovascular exercise known to boost endurance, relieve stress, and improve overall fitness. Scotia Insurance used the opportunity to underscore the importance of wellness, linking it to its offerings, including critical illness insurance.

“Health is not just about individual fitness, it’s about creating an environment where both people and ecosystems thrive,” Lopez-Spence noted.

“Through Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance, we aim to provide support for Jamaicans at every stage of life, ensuring they have access to the care they need,” she added.

The sanctuary’s work in creating protected zones for marine life has already yielded impressive results, with significant increases in fish populations and the restoration of coral reefs. These efforts not only benefit local fish farmers, but also support Jamaica’s overall ecological health.

“As a sponsor of the event, Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance plays a key role in supporting these community-driven conservation initiatives and promoting the long-term health of both Jamaica’s environment and its citizens,” the release said.

“Through events like Swim for the Sanctuary, Scotia continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable environmental practices, community engagement, and holistic health, creating lasting benefits for Jamaica’s people and ecosystems,” it added.
