Woman who killed schoolgirl Danielle Rowe gets life in prison
Dental assistant Kayodi Satchell, who admitted to slashing eight-year-old Danielle Rowe's throat in June of last year, was in tears this morning as she was sentenced to life in prison.
The 32-year-old child killer, who murdered the primary school student after allegedly contracting HIV from her father, was ordered by Justice Carolyn Tie-Powell to serve 27 years and four months in prison before being eligible for parole on the murder charge.
She was credited with one year and four months of time served.
She was also sentenced to six years and three months for child stealing but will be credited for the time spent in custody.
Satchell received a 10 percent discount for an early guilty plea.
The judge stated that anything more would have shocked the public's conscience.
Both sentences are to run concurrently.
Satchell, who pleaded guilty to murder and child stealing in September, broke down in tears during the sentencing.
In handing down the sentence, the judge said the only appropriate sentence was life, as the victim was stolen from school and killed in a brutal manner.
"It was heinous, it was savage, it was brutal, and it was nonsensical," she said.
The second-grade student of Braeton Primary and Infant School in St. Catherine was abducted on June 8 last year from her school.
The child was later found that day with her throat slashed on Roosevelt Avenue in St Andrew.
She was rushed to the Bustamante Hospital for Children by passers-by, where she died two days later.
The postmortem report revealed the child died from an incised wound to the neck.
Investigations by the police led to Satchell's arrest on August 11 last year.
She was subsequently charged with murder.
Attorneys-at-law Pierre Rogers and Donnovan Collins represented Satchell.
Attorney Matthew Hyatt was watching the proceedings for Rowe's mother Sudiene Mason.
