Mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Councillor Michael Belnavis, is reportedly recuperating at home after being chopped by an intruder at one of his properties in St Mary Monday night.

The St Mary police declined to provide information on the incident when contacted, saying that details were not available at this time but stated that as the day progressed this would be provided.

But a police source told The Gleaner that no report has been filed with the police, hence no information could be given.

Information obtained indicates that Belnavis arrived at the property around 11:00 p.m. and upon entering the house he was surprised by an intruder who chopped him several times to the upper body.

He managed to escape and drove himself to the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Jamaica Labour Party Senator Abka Fitz-Henley confirmed that the mayor sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at hospital and discharged.

“He is expected to get better pretty soon and is thankful for all the outpouring of good wishes,” Fitz-Henley told Radio Jamaica News.
