EAST PORTLAND:

Titchfield High School in Eastern Portland has received a donation of US$43,000 (approximately J$6.8 million) from the Alumni Association South Florida Chapter as part of its contribution towards education and the well-being of students.

Paul Perry, president of the Titchfield Alumni South Florida Chapter, on Monday handed over the cheque to Sheryl Horne-Mair, vice principal at the school, during a brief ceremony held on the verandah of the institution.

Perry, who spoke about the progress made by the alumni association since its inception in 2000 – which has seen its membership grow from 15 people to over 1,000 in 25 years – stated that the organisation is committed to seeing to the enhancement of students’ education, especially at this time when, according to him, financial support is limited.

“We have been making donations to the school over the years and we are primarily a fund raising entity and we work closely with the administration of the school in enacting projects that come on board,” Perry said. “We utilise the services of the alumni community in general in the Diaspora. So our members are primarily based in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States and, from time to time, we will have different types of fund raising events. We are here today to donate US$43,000 towards the scholarship programme and general funding for the library at Titchfield.

“The library project is one of the major project for 2025, where they will be upgrading the library. Additionally, we are looking at a feeding programme, whether it’s football or athletics, so as to assist with the growth and development of student athletes. One of the things we are also looking at is to see how best we can assist those students matriculating from sixth form into tertiary institutions by providing them with financial support.”

Five students will benefit from the scholarship programme this year through the donation from the alumni association, with each receiving US$2,000 out of a total of US$10,000. Additionally, the school’s library will be transformed into a study area with the latest technological equipment.
