PNP demands police update on Belnavis chopping case
The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is calling for the Jamaica Constabulary Force to make a public statement on the investigation of the incident in which Mayor of St Ann's Bay Michael Belnavis was chopped, "to assure the public that a thorough and impartial investigation is being conducted."
In a statement to the media on Wednesday, Opposition Junior Spokesperson on Security and Defence, Jouvaughnie Byfield, expressed deep concern and condemnation following the attack on Belnavis on Monday night.
“This violent act is completely unacceptable and highlights the ongoing need for decisive action to address crime in our country,” Byfield stated.
He also noted that reports indicate that an injured person who is believed to be connected to the incident has been apprehended.
Byfield is urging Mayor Belnavis to fully cooperate with the investigation to ensure that justice is served. He also expressed hope for a full and transparent report from the authorities on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Byfield said “in the context of the vague reports heavily influenced by political spin, the JCF needs to make a public statement on their investigation to assure the public that a thorough and impartial investigation is being conducted, and that no cover up is taking place to protect a politically connected person.”
He noted that if a violent crime occurred it is not up to Belnavis to determine whether a report is made to the police.
Earlier Wednesday there was an indication that the Police High Command would issue a public statement on the investigation.
The disclosure by Deputy Superintendent Anthony Wallace, acting commander of the St Mary Police, came amid media reports that a man suspected of being involved in the incident is in hospital under police guard.
Belnavis was reportedly chopped about 11:00 p.m. on Monday at a building he owns along the Boscobel main road in St Mary.
