New term of ‘Art Class for Seniors’ begins next week
“These classes are more than just lessons; they’re opportunities for seniors and their families to experience joy, connection, and growth,” Golden Designs Limited, the convener of the classes, said in a recent release. “Art is more than a creative outlet; it’s a path to mental stimulation, emotional well-being, and social engagement.”
To give seniors in western and eastern Jamaica the opportunity to participate, seniors (beginners and experts) in western Jamaica can attend the ceramics-only classes on Tuesdays from February 4 to April 22 at Retreat Heights Community Centre in Trelawny.
For seniors (no age limit) in the Kingston region, the classes are from February 5 to April 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Regardless (The Manley Centre), 4 Washington Drive, off Annette Crescent, Kingston 10. There are painting and drawing, macrame, crochet, embroidery, computer literacy, and social media fundamentals classes for $2,700 per class.
“Parents and grandparents bring wisdom and creativity to the family, and through these classes, they can share that joy with loved ones. Imagine the stories they’ll tell and the crafts they’ll showcase with pride! Encourage your senior loved ones to join, or surprise them with a thoughtful gift of registration. Together, let’s enrich lives and create lasting memories,” Golden Designs also said.
“Mama was quite happy, all smiles on her face, and that alone made me feel comfortable leaving her. For me, I was quite impressed with her involvement, especially her drawing and painting,” Dell Wong, whose 91-year-old mother had participated in a previous painting and drawing class, said.
Kay Waite, a former ceramics participant, related, “I found the class very therapeutic, especially because my joints don’t work so well. We created our own designs, and the outcomes were great! I encourage all seniors to join, not just for creating, but for the social aspect, which keeps the brain active and helps us make new friends.”
