Two policemen charged for assaulting a man during a traffic stop in 2022 have paid the complainant a total of $400,000 as part of a dispute resolution deal.

The cops, who were charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, each paid the man $200,000.

Arising from the payment, the case against the policemen, who were set to go on trial in the St Catherine Parish Court, did not process as the prosecution offered no evidence and they were formally found not guilty.

The police constables were placed before the court on October 15, 2024, following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and a ruling from the Office of the Public Prosecutions.

INDECOM says the incident involved a traffic stop which escalated to the complainant being injured.

Following their first court appearance, a trial date was set for January 28, 2025, at which time the concerned parties agreed to explore dispute resolution by way of mediation, INDECOM informed.

Subsequent to the successful mediation and confirmation of payment to the complainant, the Crown offered no evidence, and the two police officers were formally found not guilty.

The matter was completed and discharged by the court on Monday, February 3.
