JLP renews call for Mayor Swaby and Dayton Campbell to resign, dismisses KSAMC oversight committee
The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has renewed its call for Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby to resign, arguing that the establishment of an oversight committee does not absolve allegations of partisan distribution of resources at the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).
The JLP is also calling for the resignation of Dr Dayton Campbell, General Secretary of the opposition People’s National Party.
The party has accused Swaby and Campbell of wrongdoing in the distribution of resources at the municipal corporation, allegations both men have rejected.
The JLP has dismissed the establishment of the 10-member committee as a distraction, insisting that both men still have questions to answer.
The committee, which was set up last week, is responsible for identifying and implementing mechanisms to promote accountability, openness, and transparency at the KSAMC.
It will also provide oversight of the financial affairs and management of the municipality.
JLP spokesman Senator Marlon Morgan, in a media release today, said the party is not convinced by this move.
“…[The] advisory committee is a clear attempt to deceive the people of Jamaica into believing that the KSAMC, under [Swaby’s] leadership, is serious about principles of transparency and accountability,” argued Morgan.
“Jamaicans will not be fooled by the PNP’s usual tactic of setting up committees and using buzzwords such as transparency and accountability when faced with scandals,” he stated.
Morgan reiterated that Swaby and Campbell must resign.
