Investigators assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) arrested two British nationals following their attempt to smuggle cocaine through the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston on Wednesday.

This is the first cocaine seizure at the airport since the start of the year.

Reports are that at about 4:25 p.m., FNID personnel were conducting security checks for passengers boarding a British Airways flight destined for London.

During routine interviews, a British man’s actions aroused the suspicion of the police, and his luggage was searched, which led to the discovery of seven kilogrammes (15 pounds) of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases he had, according to the police.

The police say during the same screening process, a British woman's actions also aroused the suspicion of the lawmen and a thorough search of her luggage revealed approximately 7.2 kilogrammes (16 pounds) of cocaine in the lining of her suitcases.

The combined street value of the cocaine is approximately £454,400 or $92.7 million, according to the police.

Both individuals were taken into custody and are being processed.

Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.
