St Catherine municipality chairman moves to halt termination of workers under restructuring exercise
Chairman of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, Norman Scott, today raised concerns about the planned termination of some workers at the municipality as part of a restructuring exercise.
As part of the exercise, some workers are to be sent home, while others are to move from contract work to staff.
The affected workers span various positions and departments.
At today’s monthly meeting of the corporation, it was revealed that termination letters have already been issued to some employees, with more expected to follow.
Reports indicate that the affected workers are scheduled to leave at the end of the month.
Speaking at the meeting, Scott objected to the terminations and moved a motion calling for the letters to be rescinded.
“We realized that some of these workers have been on contract since I started here over 20 years ago, and learning about these termination letters is very saddening,” Scott said.
Some councillors voted in favour of rescinding the letters, while others abstained.
The motion was passed.
Following the vote, Scott stated that he would be meeting with the corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Marvalyn Pitter, and the human resource department to find a solution for the affected workers.
It was also revealed that the affected workers will undergo counselling and other interventions.
Meanwhile, several employees told The Gleaner that they are very worried about the termination letters and hope for a
resolution.
