NEPA investigating fish kill in the Rio Cobre
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says it was alerted to a fish kill along a section of the Rio Cobre in St Catherine about 6:45 a.m. Saturday.
The agency says it was made aware of the incident via its Early Warning System and has since dispatched a team to investigate.
It says initial observations indicate that the cause may be associated with a caustic chemical. The water appears cloudy and gives off a caustic scent, NEPA says.
The incident occurred between the communities of Zepherton and Vanity Fair, and NEPA says, so far, it appears that the toxic substance is contained in that area.
NEPA is advising persons to avoid using the water in that section of the river for domestic or recreational purposes until further notice.
