Former councillor for the Above Rocks division, Neil Powell, has won the selection contest to represent the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in St Catherine North Central.

The crucial run-off against businessman Paul Brown was held at the Tulloch Primary School in Bog Walk, St Catherine, on Sunday.

Powell, a businessman himself, claimed victory with 73 votes to Brown's 52 in the delegate count.

This win comes after Powell narrowly lost the Above Rocks division in February's local government election by 11 votes.

Now, he is set to challenge four-term member of parliament Natalie Neita Garvey of the People's National Party (PNP) in the upcoming general election.

Neita Garvey has represented the constituency since 2007.
