Youth advocacy group calls for strong implementation of School Nutrition Policy
The Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network (JYAN) has welcomed the recent announcement that the government has approved the long-awaited School Nutrition Policy (SNP).
“JYAN, which has been advocating for the policy for several years, sees this as a major milestone for youth health and well-being, but the journey is far from over,” said Shanielle Allen, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator at JYAN.
“We now look forward to the tabling of the policy, as a white paper, in Parliament and urge that this be treated with urgency and purpose.”
She added, “This is a win for the children of Jamaica. The approval from Cabinet is welcomed, but the real work starts now to sensitise and implement in a way which will lead to widespread institutionalisation. We must ensure this policy does more than sit on paper.”
JYAN said it remains steadfast and committed to supporting the implementation and enforcement of the policy.
“With this latest development, we turn our focus to the next crucial steps: increased inclusive consultation, public education and robust enforcement and monitoring,” Allen said.
The organisation is urging the Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information to prioritise a final round of consultations with key stakeholders, including students, to ensure the final version reflects the needs of those it will affect most.
JYAN is also calling for a strong public education campaign to ensure all stakeholders – administrators, students, parents, vendors, and concessionaires – understand the policy, its benefits and how it will be rolled out.
“The health of our children cannot wait. We emphasise our call for speedy implementation and strong enforcement mechanisms to ensure that the policy’s goals are realised in full. We stand ready to assist in raising awareness, monitoring compliance and ensuring that the policy delivers real impact in the lives of our children,” said Allen.
