More gifts for Titchfield’s winning Schools’ Challenge Quiz team
Port Antonio, Portland:
Although reeling from losses caused by a May 2023 fire, which gutted his business establishments including a supermarket, a storehouse, and cambio, chief executive officer (CEO) of G&L and Kamlyn, Garfield Sinclair, has donated $500,000 to the winning Titchfield School’s Challenge Quiz team.
The cash amount was handed to the four members of the Titchfield team, which defeated Jamaica College 26 to 23 in a hotly contested final on April 8, at Sinclair’s office in Port Antonio last Monday. The CEO was joined by his sons Kamal and Quami, along with Joy Savizon, G&L’s general manager.
Sinclair, who reflected on what he described as a massive blow dealt to his business as a result of the fire nearly two years ago, stated that despite the setback, he was compelled to provide the gift to the Titchfield team as, according to him, the boys represented the school well and made Portland proud.
“We are in the supermarket business for over 20 years. It is not easy for us to get the business back up and running following the fire in 2023,” commented Sinclair.
“We had a big setback with the fire, which put us on our knees to pray. I was in Florida when the fire happened, and afterwards we had to move all the staff to this new building at G&L supermarket and wholesale. So we transferred 80 people to this location. But today, despite the fire, we are making the sacrifice to give back to Titchfield High School, which has supported us over the years.
“The thing that has kept me going over the years, irrespective of the fire, was the love and appreciation showed to me and my family over the many decades that we are in business. My wish was for Titchfield to win the competition and they did just that. It is a very good thing for Port Antonio. So this is a part of us giving back,” Sinclair concluded.
In the meantime Kamal and Quami both agreed that the decision to donate money to the members of the Titchfield quiz team was the right one as, according to them, with victory comes reward.
