PNP condemns alleged police manhandling of schoolboy

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has condemned as disturbing and deeply troubling an incident involving members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and a 15-year-old student.

An amateur video of the encounter was captured and is now widely circulated.

In a snippet of the video, seen by our news team, the child is in uniform and two policemen assigned to the Glengoffe Police Station are seen trying to put the boy in a service vehicle. The boy refused to be placed in the vehicle and the policemen began to pull him and a tussle ensued.

Further reports are that the police used a baton to hit the child, injuring him on his wrist.

In a statement the PNP said, “This appalling incident has sparked outrage across the nation, and on the face of it reflects a gross abuse of authority and an unacceptable use of force against a child. No society that values the rule of law and the dignity of its citizens can tolerate such behaviour, particularly from those sworn to serve and protect.”

The PNP are calling for the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) to launch a full and transparent investigation into the matter, and for all police personnel involved to be held fully accountable under the law.

“Immediate action must also be taken by the leadership of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to ensure that incidents of this nature are not tolerated,” the PNP said.

Opposition Spokesperson on Justice Senator Donna Scott-Mottley stated that this is a reminder that further work is needed to reform the culture and operations of the security forces.

“We must prioritise training in human rights, de-escalation techniques, and sensitivity with vulnerable members of the community, especially minors,” said Senator Scott-Mottley.

The Opposition said it stands firmly with the child and his family and joins the Jamaican people in demanding accountability and reform.

“Our children must be protected, not brutalised by those in positions of power,” the PNP said.

The boy's mother has reportedly made a report to Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB).
