The Government and the Opposition have congratulated incumbent Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trinidad and Tobago’s Kamla Persad-Bissessar, head of the United National Congress, whose respective parties won national polls on Monday.

Carney's governing Liberal Party won the national elections for a fourth term, in a comeback many believe was partly driven by unprecedented attacks from United States President Donald Trump.

"Your victory is a testament to the confidence reposed in you by the people of Canada to lead the country as the international community grapples with multifaceted challenges arising from geopolitical tensions, disruptions in supply chains, market shocks, food and human insecurity, and climate change," said Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness in a statement.

"I am confident that under your leadership, we will be able to forge a path toward unity and consensus on the issues that unite us as a family of nations," he continued, adding that Jamaica anticipates a continued close bilateral relationship with Canada, which has endured for more than six decades.

"We are keen to ensure that the collaborative path we have forged over the years will not only be sustained but enhanced, as together we seek to promote the prosperity of the government and people of Canada."

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Mark Golding expressed similar sentiments, noting that Canada has long been an important partner to Jamaica.

“I look forward to working together in the future to continue building on the strong ties that exist between the two nations," said Golding in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"I commend the people of Canada for their continued commitment to democratic participation, and wish Prime Minister-elect Carney every success as he leads Canada into this new chapter."

Meanwhile, regarding Persad-Bissessar, Holness stated that her success at the polls is an indication of the confidence of the people of Trinidad and Tobago in her leadership.

Holness noted that the new administration’s mandate presents an important opportunity for strengthened cooperation.

“Prime Minister-elect Persad-Bissasser ‘s electoral triumph heralds a renewed opportunity to deepen and broaden our collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including, but not limited to, trade and investment, regional security, energy and climate change.”

Holness reaffirmed Jamaica’s commitment to working closely with Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar’s administration to promote prosperity, security, and progress for both nations and the wider Caribbean family.

For Golding, he said the people of Trinidad and Tobago have once again demonstrated the strength of democracy in our region,

“I wish Prime Minister-Elect Persad-Bissessar and her team every success as they work to advance the aspirations of their citizens.

“Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago share deep and enduring bonds, and I look forward to continued collaboration in the spirit of regional unity and progress.”
