The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has moved to clarify that the animal on the loose in Black River, St Elizabeth is a wildcat called an ocelot and not a tiger cub.

Ocelots are members of the feline family.

The JDF explains that initial information suggested that the animal was a baby tiger.

However, following further assessment and expert consultation, the JDF can now confirm that the animal is not a tiger, but an ocelot.

Ocelots are typically twice the size of the average house cat.

The one in question, which was illegally smuggled into the island, is reported to be juvenile and is approximately the size of a young domestic cat and with a dark, spotted coat.

“At this time, the ocelot has not yet been located, and efforts are ongoing in collaboration with relevant authorities to safely recover it,” said the JDF in its statement on Wednesday evening.

“Members of the public are being reminded to report any sightings to the JDF at 876-926-8121, National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) at 876-754-7540 or the Jamaica Constabulary Force at 119.”
