Ashoka Road in Waterhouse, St Andrew, will be renamed Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive after the decorated World and Olympic champion.

Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby told a meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Tuesday morning that the renaming ceremony is scheduled for May 25 at 2 p.m.

Fraser-Pryce grew up in the gritty inner-city community in Kingston 11.

Swaby said it is the KSAMC’s way of continuing to demonstrate its appreciation to the track and field great, “for her achievement and pride she has brought Jamaica and in particular her community”.

He said the event is in keeping with the resolution passed by the corporation on September 10, 2024.

In February, the sprint legend was bestowed with the Key to the City of Kingston, the municipal corporation’s highest honour.

At that time, Swaby said, “This is not an honour that is handed out lightly. It’s a distinction reserved for those who have made an enduring impact on our city, our nation, and our people. Shelly-Ann’s story is one of resilience, determination, and excellence.”
