A man who stabbed his brother with a piece of broken bottle while the two were at the courthouse in Spanish Town, St Catherine was on Monday sentenced to 12 months in prison at hard labour.

Durran Rose, a 29-year-old labourer of Spanish Town, had pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.

During sentencing, the court heard that a psychiatric report found that he was fit and mentally stable.

Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle told Rose that without a previous conviction, sentencing would start at 24 months’ imprisonment, but with his guilty plea, it would take it down to 18 months.

His brother, who is the complainant, begged the judge to be lenient.

Rose was then sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.

The facts of the case are that around 12:30 p.m. on March 11, Rose attacked his brother near the entrance of Court Number One at the St Catherine Parish Court.

An irate Rose used a piece of a broken bottle to stab his brother repeatedly in the face.

The attack occurred while both men were waiting to return to court following a mediation session regarding a case in which Rose was reportedly injured by his brother.

Police rushed to the scene and apprehended Rose before he could escape.

First aid was administered to his brother, while Rose was taken into custody.

Rose was subsequently charged with unlawful wounding.

He later pleaded guilty.
