In celebration of Labour Day 2025, WPM Waste Management Ltd mobilised community volunteers, civic partners, and local agencies for a clean-up and beautification project in Masemure, Westmoreland. The initiative targeted a long-standing illegal dumpsite, converting it into a vibrant green space using recycled materials and donated greenery.

Under the national theme, ‘Protect the Environment: Our Land, Our Duty, Our Future’ and slogan ‘Jamaica Nice, Protect Wi Paradise’, the project showcased how environmental stewardship and community collaboration can turn neglected areas into models of sustainability and civic pride.

Volunteers cleared bulky and scattered waste, and the WPM’S enforcement team and sanitation officers installed ‘No Dumping’ signs and creatively repurposed painted tyres to create decorative planters. Trees and plants used in the transformation were donated by the Westmoreland branch of the Forestry Department, while WPM provided equipment, materials, and coordinated support.

WPM’s regional operations manager, Edward Muir, commended the community’s spirit of volunteerism, stating, “This is what Labour Day is all about – unity, pride, and purpose in communities. By working together, we’ve not only beautified a space but also delivered a powerful message about reclaiming our environment. Masemure now stands as a testament to what’s possible when communities take ownership and ‘Pass the Broom’ to keep public spaces clean.”

The newly transformed space is expected to serve not only as a deterrent to improper waste disposal but also as a symbol of hope and sustainability for the residents of Masemure and its environs.
