‘We will never surrender Jamaica’ – ruling JLP's deputy leader repeats vow as election looms
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Deputy Leader Desmond McKenzie has declared that the party will not back down in the face of what he described as political attacks from the People’s National Party (PNP), vowing that Labourites will stand firm behind Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
“Labourites, we nah budge, we nah move an inch. We will never surrender Jamaica to the PNP again. Never!” McKenzie declared.
He was addressing party supporters on Sunday at the JLP’s constituency conference in St Andrew East Central, where he also criticised the PNP’s opposition to the appointment of accountant Dennis Chung as head of the Financial Investigations Division.
McKenzie claimed the criticism was part of a broader political agenda.
“The Jamaica Labour Party and its supporters will push back at the PNP when they come at Andrew Holness. We not going to allow you... There is a young man who has proven himself, and yuh want to destroy him,” he said.
McKenzie, who also serves as a Cabinet minister, made similar remarks during a party event in February.
"We will never surrender Jamaica to the PNP. Never!" he said at the time.
The general election is expected by September.
