The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal shooting of a man by police during an alleged confrontation in Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Thursday morning.

The police have identified the deceased man as Damian Nembhard, otherwise called 'Dogie', of Huckerby Avenue, Spanish Town.

Reports are that about 5:30 a.m., there was a joint operation involving police personnel from St Andrew North and St Catherine North divisions.

The team went to premises in Huckerby Avenue, off Brunswick Avenue, when a man reportedly looked over a fence and the police entered the yard.

Nembhard reportedly fired at the police party which took evasive action and returned the fire.

It is further reported that Nembhard entered the house, followed by the police who allegedly found him with a firearm and suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

The police say the weapon was a nine millimetre pistol affixed with a magazine containing two rounds of nine-millimetre cartridges.

Nembhard was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
