The St Catherine North police have arrested a 40-year-old man for alleged breaches of the Firearms Act.

About 4:45 a.m., a police party was reportedly called to the scene of loud explosions at a bar along Walks Road, Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Upon arrival of the team, the suspect was allegedly observed with a bulge in his waistband.

The police accosted him and conducted a search of his person and reportedly discovered a nine-millimetre pistol affixed with a magazine containing 13 rounds of cartridges.

The police say initial checks revealed that he didn't have a licence or permit for the weapon.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorised possession of ammunition.

The suspect's name is being withheld pending further investigation.
