A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck Jamaica on Wednesday afternoon, shaking several parishes and prompting a flurry of reports from residents on social media.

The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, said the "minor" tremor occurred at 4:15 p.m., with its epicentre located southwest of Buff Bay in Portland and a focal depth of 16 kilometres.

The quake was felt in St Andrew, St Mary, and St Catherine, according to the unit. Social media users also reported feeling the tremor in Kingston and Clarendon.

The latest event follows a magnitude 3.1 earthquake recorded last month near Golden Spring in St Andrew.
