PNP's Zuleika Jess promises $2 million welfare fund to assist needy in St Elizabeth North East
People’s National Party (PNP) candidate for St Elizabeth North East, Zuleika Jess, says she will establish a special welfare fund, if elected, to assist residents in need.
Speaking at a party meeting in Black River on Wednesday night, Jess told cheering supporters that the initiative would be funded by her personally and rolled out within her first 90 days in office.
“I made a decision that within the first 90 days of becoming your next Member of Parliament, I will be setting up a special welfare fund, and I have put $2 million of my personal money to start the fund,” Jess declared.
She said the fund would directly address the needs she has witnessed first-hand while walking through the constituency.
“I know say the medication needs to be bought, the prescription needs to be filled, but dutty tough. That special welfare fund to accommodate and facilitate your needs will be in place so that you can benefit. Medication can start to buy, roof and housing can start getting fixed up, groceries can be bought,” she said.
Jess also committed to donating her first two months’ salary to the fund, declaring, “I’m not in politics for the income; I am in it for the outcome.”
The aspiring MP said the fund is part of a broader vision to ensure that the people benefit from her victory at the polls.
