'Dan Dan' takes first trip to India, excited to spread influence to Asian continent
Popular social media influencer Dan Dan has been selected to participate in an exchange programme funded by the Indian government that will see him representing Jamaica in the South Asian nation.
The viral content creator, whose real name is Danar Royal, shared that he is not only excited to represent Jamaica overseas but interested in growing his following on the Asian content.
Sharing that his journey into the world of content creation stemmed from his passion for the arts and began merely as an outlet for creative expression, Royal explained that he is really surprised at the profound impact that social media influencers have had on media and the international landscape.
“A decade ago, I could not have imagined that social media would have elevated to this level, with even governments turning to content creators [who are] popular on these platforms to promote the strengthening of cultural ties,” said Royal.
“And to think people used to think going on social was something you did in your spare time, now it’s where life not only unfolds but real knowledge sharing happens.”
A seafarer by profession and marine operations manager, Royal shared that the dynamic nature of social media is one Jamaica as a country can benefit from, adding that leveraging the power of the tool could help the country to finally achieve sustainable economic growth.
“Just an opportunity like this should be a sign of where social media and influencer marketing is heading. This is an area where we don’t have to worry about things like economies of scale. Jamaica can win here,” said Royal.
“I am seeing this as an opportunity not just to spread the good news about Brand Jamaica but also as an opportunity to engage the Asian market.“
Royal noted that social media is limitless, pointing out that, currently, while he has amassed a large Jamaican following, he continues to eye opportunities for growth.
“Jamaica has, what, three million people and a diaspora probably equal in size - so six million Jamaicans worldwide. A place like India literally has nearly a billion people. Even a small audience in these places can be lucrative for a local content creator like me,” said Royal.
“Globalising Jamaican culture means more people will understand us, our language, ways, customs and values… not just for things like tourism but beyond that they may come to like our products and purchase them. Can you imagine if Indians started to like our speciality products? Whole industries could emerge,” added Royal.
Royal shared that his supporters can expect some content treats over the next few weeks as he plans to provide daily updates from various Indian landmarks he is expected to visit.
The High Commission of India last Monday announced that Jamaica, along with Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guyana and Suriname, had been selected to participate in its familiarisation visits for content creators from Latin American countries.
