Janice Allen promises water, land titles to residents of St James Central
Opposition Senator and People's National Party (PNP) candidate for St James Central, Janice Allen, has lashed out at what she describes as the “deplorable” water crisis affecting the constituency, while vowing to deliver land titles and critical infrastructure upgrades if elected to Parliament.
Addressing supporters at a spot meeting in Rose Heights on Tuesday night, Allen said four major water tanks across the constituency have been out of service for years, blaming incumbent Member of Parliament Heroy Clarke for failing to replace them.
“The water situation is absolutely deplorable, unacceptable, and cannot continue,” Allen declared. “A good MP would have replaced one each year. When I become your Member of Parliament, they will be brought back into commission, one by one.”
For periods covering one and two weeks, residents of Cornwall Court, Salt Spring and other communities in the constituency have had been without water due to drought conditions coupled with mechanical issues on the National Water Commission system.
In the meantime, Allen also committed to distributing land titles in communities such as Cornwall Court, Flower Hill and Salt Spring.
“The PNP believes Jamaicans deserve land, and we will amend the legislation to ensure more people can hold land in this country,” Allen said. “This Montego Bay girl is here to deliver for you, and I will not stop until your life is better.”
PNP President Mark Golding, who was in the constituency to support Allen on a tour and spot meeting, said solar-powered water systems will be part of the PNP’s national strategy to solve Jamaica’s chronic water woes.
“This is a land of wood and water. The problem is not supply, it’s distribution and with solar technology, there are solutions we can implement,” Golding said.
He urged supporters to work hard to reclaim the seat for the PNP.
“We have held this constituency before, and we can win it again,” he declared.
