SERHA probing attack on staff by male patient who escaped KPH
The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) says it is working closely with the police and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape and subsequent fatal shooting of a male patient on Wednesday.
In a statement today, SERHA said that early yesterday morning, the man forcibly breached medical restraints, assaulted a member of staff, and left the hospital.
A police report seen by The Gleaner identifies the man as 24-year-old Michael Edwards, a labourer of New Haven, St Andrew.
The police say he was shot by a soldier during an alleged confrontation.
He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), where he was pronounced dead.
The police say the Independent Commission of Investigations was informed about the incident.
SERHA, in its statement, indicated that all appropriate protocols are being reviewed to establish the facts of the case and to implement additional security measures where necessary.
"We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. We are also providing support to the staff members affected by this incident."
The regional authority said it remains committed to transparency and accountability as it continues to prioritise the safety and well-being of all patients, staff, and the wider public.
