Hello mi neighbour! | Some tips for young people preparing for the long haul
Hello mi neighbour!
And special greetings to my very young neighbours. Some of you are just entering or leaving college. Some of you are about to go job hunting, become a part of the family business or become your own boss. Wherever you are along the journey, the road ahead maybe long and winding: filled with adventures – negative and positive. Uncertainties and set backs may pave your path – no fault of yours! It is called life.
As you build your empire,
· prepare well
· pray hard
· forgive often
· be kind to everyone
· align your life with your Maker, early.
And all should go well…
By now, you could have been hearing phrases like
· “pain is the flip side of pleasure”
· “look before you leap”
· “haste makes waste”
· “all that glitters is not gold”
Don’t overlook them! They could save you much misery down the road.
“Pain is the flipside of pleasure”, suggests that engaging in unwholesome activities or behaviours that bring temporary pleasure could ultimately result in negative consequences.
Excessive drinking drug use, illicit sex, etc. can lead to addiction, health problems, and personal difficulties.
Daily consumption of your favourite foods can result in serious, health issues. Pursuing relationships that only bring temporary highs, can lead to emotional pain, manipulation and abuse. Engaging in activities (social media, partying, etc.) as a means of escaping from life’s realities, can lead to addiction, social isolation, decreased productivity and poverty.
Excessive focus on pleasure will not only lead to physical harm, emotional distress, such as guilt, shame and anxiety but critical illnesses and strained relationships. Recognising the potential consequences of these activities will help our young neighbours to make wise choices without denying themselves the joy of living.
My young neighbours, the phrase “all that glitters is not gold” means that not everything that appears attractive and appealing is wholesome. This phrase is a warning against judging things solely on their appearance. Some of those charming/attractive persons beckoning to you, could be monsters in masks. And watch that seemingly lucrative opportunity, it could cost you a fortune.
Therefore, “look before you leap”!
“ Look before you leap” means to think carefully and consider the potential consequences before taking action. It’s a warning to be cautious and not to rush into situations without proper consideration. Take time to weigh the pros and cons, and think through potential outcomes. Get to know the other party before committing to a relationship or making a significant decision. Even if the getting-to-know-you period takes 10 years, it’s worth every minute! Research and evaluate opportunities carefully before investing time, money, or resources. Make sure you do not “…jump to hasty conclusion”!
“ Don’t jump to hasty conclusions” is a wise reminder to avoid making premature judgements or decisions without considering all the facts or perspectives. Do your due diligence ‘because haste makes waste.’
“ Haste makes waste.” is a proverb that warns against rushing into or acting too quickly on any given matter. Why? This could lead to wasted time, resources and effort. It’s a reminder to check in with your parents, guardian, counsellor or teacher, pastor who through care, consideration and prayer could help you to avoid unnecessary consequences.
As you go forward, and as you make your long term decisions, remember to:
· evaluate potential risks and opportunities
· gather information and weighing options
· consider potential consequences and outcomes
· ensure compliance with laws and regulations
· conduct thorough background checks
Hope I helped you to prepare for the long haul.
And remember: in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
