189 candidates nominated to contest September 3 general election
The Electoral Commission of Jamaica says a total of 189 candidates have been nominated to contest the general election set for September 3.
The major political parties, the People's National Party and the Jamaica Labour Party, have each nominated 63 candidates to run in all the constituencies across the island.
The Jamaica Progressive Party has nominated 47 candidates and the United Independents' Congress 7.
Nine persons have been nominated to run as independents.
A total of six candidates were nominated for the local government by-elections in Denham Town, Chancery Hall and Olympic Gardens, all representing the JLP and the PNP.
